It is the heart of the Liverpool skyline, and for over 50 years, it was the tallest building in the United Kingdom.
The Royal Liver Building is the crown jewel of the "Three Graces" on the Pier Head. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas and opened in 1911, it was historically significant as Europe's first skyscraper and one of the first buildings in the world constructed from reinforced concrete.
But its true fame comes from the two 18-foot mythical Liver Birds—Bella and Bertie—perched atop its clock towers. Legend says that if they were to ever fly away, the city would cease to exist. (Bella looks out to sea to watch for sailors, while Bertie looks inward to make sure the pubs are open).
Whether you know it as a symbol of Scouse pride, a masterpiece of Edwardian Baroque architecture, or as the Gotham City Police Department from the movie The Batman, this collection celebrates the undisputed icon of Liverpool.
