It has been called "the lipstick on the collar of the Bullring" and the "candle in the sky." But to anyone from Birmingham, The Rotunda is simply the ultimate mid-century symbol of the city.
Designed by local architect James A. Roberts and completed in 1965, this Grade II listed tower is a masterpiece of elegant, curvilinear modernist design. It was originally intended to look like a candle with a "flame" weather beacon on top, representing the burning ambition of the Swinging Sixties.
It is also a survivor. It withstood the IRA bombings of 1974 and refused to be demolished during the massive regeneration of the Bullring in the 2000s, instead being fully rejuvenated. Today, it stands as the pin on the map of Birmingham—a sleek, retro-futurist tower that blends 1960s nostalgia with modern cool.
Whether you are a proud Brummie, a fan of Brutalist-era architecture, or simply love the "Mad Men" aesthetic of the 60s, this collection celebrates the building that defines the Birmingham skyline.
This products in this collection are not official Rotunda products and are not associated in any way with the building or its owners.
