Spanning the Mersey valley in a grand rhythm of twenty-seven red-brick arches, Stockport Viaduct stands as one of the largest and most heroic brick structures in Western Europe. Engineered by George Watson Buck in consultation with local architect John Lowe and completed in 1840, this monumental rail crossing brought daring Victorian infrastructure straight into the heart of the town, quickly becoming the emotional gateway and definitive homecoming marker for Greater Manchester.
