A collection of gorgeous products celebrating Hiroyuki Wakabayashi's brooding central Kyoto essay in intense Japanese postmodern architecture from the bubble era.
The Maruto Building No. 17 from 1991 in Kyoto, exemplifies Wakabayashi's signature "steampunk" architectural style. The structure presents a fortress-like facade, utilizing weathered green copper plating, dark metal columns, and exposed concrete to evoke an aged, mechanical aesthetic. Vertical fins and geometric protrusions create a sense of depth and industrial complexity, resembling a machine or a dystopian relic. Wakabayashi's design incorporates decorative rivets and emphasised structural lines, merging the appearance of decay with futuristic strength. This distinct visual language makes the building a standout example of Japanese postmodernism, blending raw industrial materials with an expressive, almost cinematic atmosphere.
