It is widely considered the most beautiful skyscraper in China—and perhaps the world.
The Jin Mao Tower (Golden Prosperity Building) is the crown jewel of the Shanghai skyline. A postmodern masterpiece of the late 20th Century it was designed by Adrian Smith (of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) and completed in 1999, it is a stunning masterpiece of Neo-Futurism and Art Deco revival. Unlike the glass towers that surround it, the Jin Mao is a modern interpretation of a traditional Chinese Pagoda, built with a rhythm based entirely on the lucky number 8.
Rising 88 stories in 13 tiered segments, it features a complex facade of steel, glass, and aluminum lattice that glows silver during the day and gold at night. Famous for its dizzying 33-story atrium (one of the tallest in the world) inside the Grand Hyatt, it represents the perfect fusion of Eastern culture and Western engineering.
Whether you are a fan of "supertall" engineering, a lover of Art Deco geometry, or someone who loves the energy of Shanghai, this collection celebrates the city's most elegant giant.
