For anyone arriving at Manchester Piccadilly station, Gateway House is the first thing you see. With its mesmerizing, serpentine curves winding down the station approach, it is the unofficial "Welcome to Manchester."
Designed by the legendary Richard Seifert (the architect behind London's Centre Point and Tower 42), this 1969 midcentury modern masterpiece is affectionately known by Mancunians as "The Lazy S." It is one of the finest examples of 1960s Modernism in the UK—a "Space Age" ribbon of glass and concrete that breaks away from the boxy style of the era to create something truly fluid, thrilling and futuristic.
Whether you love it for its architectural history or simply because it signals that you are finally home in glorious, great Manchester, this collection celebrates the city's -and we would argue the country's- most exquisite curvaceous landmark.
