When it was completed in 1988, China Wharf didn't just stand out; it revolutionized the central London riverfront.
Designed by Piers Gough of the renowned practice CZWG, this striking red landmark was one of the first major pieces of the Thames riverside regeneration. But rather than mimicking the plain warehouses of the past, Gough created something radically new.
The building is a masterclass in creatively interpreting context. The riverside facade, with its famous red concrete walls and circular windows, is a bold tribute to the industrial silos and ship funnels that once dominated the Thames. It is "Jazz Modern" meets gritty industry—a design that is unapologetically loud, formally complex, and fiercely original.
Now protected as a Grade II listed building, China Wharf is recognized as a seminal example of British Postmodernism. It stands as a testament to a time when architecture dared to be different. This collection celebrates the curves, the colour, and the enduring power of Bermondsey’s most famous landmark.
